The Escape that Sparked the Manchester Martyrs

Manchester Martyrs

On this day 1867, two Fenians, Thomas Kelly and Timothy Deasy escaped from police custody in Manchester following a well planned ambush by colleagues. During their escape Sergeant Brett of the Manchester police was killed. The attack would result in the execution of three Fenians – William Philip Allen, Michael Larkin, and Michael O’Brien who would become known as the Manchester Martyrs.
