TENSIONS in Derry’s Galliagh remained high last night following the appearance of a bonfire overnight.
It comes just weeks after the removal of material at the same spot which sparked three nights of riots in the Moss Park area of Galliagh. After Housing Executive workers removed the material, community workers set up a three-day festival as an alternative to the August 15 bonfire. However, youths rebuilt a huge bonfire with wooden pallets overnight on Tuesday and were planning to light the fire around 10pm last night. There were reports that several residents left their homes last night to avoid any potential violence. Earlier yesterday, police removed a large bonfire from the Lecky Road in Derry’s Bogside. The bonfire was built on the main thoroughfare overnight but police moved in around 10am yesterday to remove the material.
