DISSIDENT republicans claim to have carried out a mortar and gun attack on police in West Belfast.
Using a recognised codeword, the organisation calling itself Oglaigh na hEireann said it was responsible for a horizontal mortar attack and a ” sniper attack ” in the Glen Road area of the city. The PSNI said a police vehicle had been shot at on the Glen Road at around 4am on Friday but made no mention of a mortar attack. Chief Superintendent George Clarke said the ” potentially murderous ” attack was aimed at killing a police officer. Five Land Rovers and a large number of Tactical Support Unit officers spent several hours searching waste ground close to an industrial estate at the junction of the Glen Road and Hannahstown Hill. Police said the operation – which is believed to have involved intelligence officers – was to investigate ” reports of suspicious activity.”
” It is completely unacceptable that officers who were carrying out their professional duty on behalf of the community should be subjected to a potentially murderous attack,” Mr Clarke said. ” This was a reckless and cowardly attempt to kill a police officer which also put the lives of the local community in danger and it is fortunate no-one was injured or worse. ” These people who carried out such a senseless attack show a total disregard for the safety of those living in this area. They will not prevent us from delivering a protective service and we will put in place any measures necessary to take a robust stance against those who are determined to disrupt and attack their own community. ” We would ask for anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area during the early hours of last Fri morning to contact police on 0845 600 8000.” Last week dissidents from the Real IRA and Derry-based group RAAD announced they had joined together with other smaller groups. However, ONH is believed to have remained a separate entity.
