Rally support for Marian Price

A PUBLIC meeting has been organised in Coalisland to rally support for Marian Price, who was jailed after Secretary of State Owen Patterson revoked her release license.

“We the Justice for Marian Price campaign would call on the people of Tyrone and beyond to attend the upcoming public meeting that will take place in St Patrick’s hall Coalisland at 8.00pm on July 4th. The meeting is organised by individuals and is not affiliated to any group or organisation”, said a spokesperson for the group.

“Marian Price is interned at the whim of the British secretary of state Owen Paterson who claims to have revoked a licence Marian was released from prison when close to death in 1980. This licence was overridden by the pardon Marian received six days after her release. The British authorities claim that this pardon is either lost or shredded. To date there has been no investigation to recover this crucial piece of evidence. Marian spent over one year in isolation and is still suffering as result of this torturous treatment.

“On June 22nd less than one week before UN appointed doctors are scheduled to visit, Marian was moved from Hydebank prison to a secure hospital unit in Belfast. In a statement her family said “Past moves made on medical grounds have proved detrimental and indeed exacerbated Marian’s complex medical conditions.

“In recent discussions with medical consultants charged with Marian’s care it was stated that an unsuitable environment would be ‘counter-therapeutic’. In fact a doctor representing the state gave evidence that going to a secure hospital unit would compound Marian’s acute illnesses and would mitigate against any beneficial treatment.

“The family hope that this move to a secure unit is not a cynical ploy on the eve of a visit by UN doctors to stymie any criticism of Marian’s treatment.”

Former MP of Tyrone and human rights activist Bernadette McAliskey has called on people to speak out for Marian Price. Bernadette spoke at a campaign meeting in Conway mill and made clear the need to agitate, educate and organise.

I am from vancouver, canada and i am glad to hear that Marian Price has been released from prison.I wrote a letter to the British gov. concerning Marian Price. It is women like her thatwill make the necessary changes in Northern Ireland.
I met Bernadette Devlin McAliskey in Montreal in the early 1980s.I went Belfast in 1996 and i spoke to some People at Falls Road.In was in July and the reactionary orange order was making a lot of trouble in and around Belfast.I wanted to visit Bernadette just outside Belfast but the bus driver told me that he couldn’t take me there because the orange order was making it to dangerous. At the present time im keeping in touch with what is going on in Northern Ireland.I just wrote a letter to a Political Prisoner named Stephen Murney who is in Maghaberry Prison.Anyway keep up the good work.
