This memorial card for the leaders and other fallen of the 1916 Rising was published following the death of Thomas Ashe on 25 September 1917. Ashe was a founding member of the Irish Volunteers and fought at Ashbourne, County Meath during the Easter Rising. He died following a prolonged hunger strike at the Mater Hospital, Dublin, after being force-fed by prison authorities. These kinds of memorial cards exemplify how the Rising and its leaders would be most effectively commemorated: through songs, posters, flags and cards which were published by various Republican groups claiming legitimacy from the events of Easter Week.
